Domestic Sewage Treatment

For Domestic Dwellings without mains drainage there are a number of private sewage treatment systems available. One such option is a sewage treatment plant. WCI’S VSM bespoke, submerged-aeration, sewage treatment plant offers straightforward installation, low maintenance and high quality treatment. The VSM plant is installed completely below-ground with one 450mm lockable manhole cover, flush with the ground, present for access. There are no mechanical or electrical parts inside the plant and a quiet, all-weather, reliable, low power, electric, air blower supplies air into the plant from above-ground.

The VSM plant comprises three integral chambers:

  • A primary chamber which simulates the work of a septic tank allowing solids to settle and scum to float
  • A treatment zone where random plastic media supports colonies of bacteria which are provided with air and ‘breakdown’ the sewage effluent
  • A final settlement chamber that clarifies the treated effluent before it is discharged to a watercourse, land or further treatment as specified by the Environment Agency Consent to Discharge documentation

  • Larger Applications

Over the last two and a half decades, WCI has designed many waste water treatment schemes, addressing Village applications, Industrial waste water and low energy environmental projects. Such systems cater for developments such as golf and country clubs, racecourses, housing developments, office complexes and hotels. All systems are bespoke and as we design and manufacture our own plants, unusual or difficult applications can be easily accommodated. Each system is designed for our individual clients needs. Although each scheme is very often bespoke, it is worth mentioning a few which have been particularly rewarding and enjoyable. Site information is confidential, and we always work under a ‘duty of care’.

    > Midlands UK

An International Company employing 800, including a busy canteen, discharging to a watercourse with a consent of 10 mg/l Ammonia as N. Magistrates had fined the Company £28,000 for breaching their treatment quality. WCI installed pre-treatment, aeration and extended Ammonia-stripping facilities. The maintenance staff are fully involved in understanding both the design and monitoring. Daily monitoring of the treated effluent has now moved to weekly testing and at no stage has the Ammonia reached 2 mg/l as N. WCI are addressing Phase 2 in 2008.

    > South East UK

A Large hotel with over 80 bedrooms and 50 support staff, with an existing pumped application to a main sewer. After taking levels throughout a 3 km heathland, and discussions with Natural England, WCI installed a gravity pipe line under an SSSI. The seed bank was saved, and a 40 year problematic pumping situation was instead served by gravity. Grease traps were installed along with a water harvesting system.

    > South West UK

A sea terminal with fluctuating staff numbers and a tide to consider. With an eye on the tides and with seven lorries waiting like a wagon train, a bespoke deep invert sewage treatment plant was installed in 45 minutes. The lorries were carrying aggregate, water for ballasting and concrete; building control were overseeing the work and the E.A issued the initial consent.

    > Libya

To prevent well water contamination, a sewage treatment plant was constructed from locally available materials and the treated effluent used for dust control and irrigation. At the time of the installation the day temperatures reached 43C.
